Database search tips

Understanding your search results

The search results will list all names that match the search criteria entered. The list will display: Surname, name YYYY-YYYY – Library code – page number. The library code will help you (or a researcher) locate the original reference for that name.  For instance, a Library code REC-OBI-NNN-N means there is a reference to the name in the Obituary record file #NNN on page N.<br> Some other codes are:

  • LIS for lists such as BMD (Birth Marriage Death_ records
  • GEN for genealogy records
  • HIS for Historical books.

Dates (e.g., 1900-1999) after the name indicate years of birth and /or death. Dates in square [] brackets usually indicate a marriage date. Use the ADD TO LIST button to create a research list of items that you can print and bring with you when visiting our archives.  Clicking on Proceed to checkout allows you to send the list to our team of volunteer researchers, who will provide a quote for completing the research on your behalf.
